The six day 4-H Marine Science Camp will take place on the Oregon State University (OSU) campus for one day and one night and in Newport at the Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) for four days and nights. Transportation is provided between OSU and Hatfield. On the OSU campus youth will get a taste of dorm life, tour the campus and some research labs, and be introduced to their role as 4-H Marine Science Ambassadors. In Newport campers will engage in education programs in a variety of locations including the Hatfield Marine Science Center, Yaquina Bay, and Yaquina Headland Natural Area. Youth will explore and conduct research in the Yaquina Bay estuary via guided kayak expeditions. Additional program activities will be planned based on the interest of registered youth participants.
The 4-H Marine Science Ambassador Camp will enroll just 32 participants entering the 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in the fall of 2014. Oregon resident students currently in grade 9, 10, or 11 and who have an interest in science, technology and mathematics are eligible. Applications from historically underserved and underrepresented students with limited opportunities are encouraged. There will be a focus on introduction to college life, science and technology and public education that will provide each camper with the knowledge and skills they need to become 4-H Marine Science Ambassadors. The 4-H Marine Science Ambassador’s Mission is to raise awareness about the health of the ocean and to show how changes are impacting various ecosystems and human life.
