Operation Purple Camp
Oregon 4-H was chosen to host the National Military Family Association's Operation Purple Camps in 2006, 2007, and 2008. The NMFA is an organization dedicated to serving military families throughout our nation. Operation Purple Camps are free, week-long, overnight camps open to all military children. The program aims to help military kids experience carefree fun while also learning coping skills to deal with war-related stress and fostering relationships with others who know what they are going through The program has grown in Oregon from one week of residential camp to four weeks of camp offered in the summer of 2008. Camps are hosted at the Oregon 4-H Center for military children ages 8-12, while a new teen high adventure camp was hosted in Central Oregon in 2008. In 2008, there were 100 weeks of camp held in 62 locations in 37 states and territories. The camps are sponsored through generous gifts from the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation and The Sierra Club.
