Wasco County is bordered on the north by the Columbia River and figured
prominently in the state's early history. The county seat, The Dalles,
gained fame as the town at the end of the Oregon Trail and Indian tribes
gathered for generations near Celilo Falls to trade and fish. Today,
the local economy is supported through agriculture, forest products,
manufacturing, hydroelectric power, and transportation. The current
population consists of 22,500 residents; Latinos comprise about 9.3
percent of this total.
Wasco County 4-H sponsors an after school program Monday-Friday at
Colonel Wright Elementary School. Children in grades K-5 engage in physical
activities and in arts and crafts, gardening, and nutrition-related
activities. The program expanded in the fall of 2005 to include homework
and reading assistance. Without the program, most of the participants
would be home alone.
More details can be found in the sections relating to local vision
and mission statements, program goals
and objectives, and key program outcomes.
