Yamhill County is rich in natural diversity. The floor of the Willamette
Valley, with its winding rivers, clear streams, and fertile fields,
supports a multitude of enterprises. Nursery and greenhouse plants,
grass seed, orchard fruits and nuts, wine grapes, vegetables, dairy
cattle, Christmas trees, and woodlots thrive in the valleys and foothills.
The Coast Range mountains shelter water supplies, vast forests, and
recreational sites. This primarily rural area has also attracted non-seasonal
industries including a steel rolling mill, electronic and dental equipment
manufacturing, and a newsprint mill. About 9.5% of the county's 57,000
residents are of Latino origin.
For several years, Yamhill County 4-H and local schools have collaborated
to offer the Mother-Daughter Choices Program. This program targets Latino
girls in grades 5-8 and their mothers, who participate in the program
alongside their daughters. The purpose of the program is to raise expectations
for the girls' futures. Activities are held monthly throughout the school
year and focus on goal setting, communication, problem solving, self-esteem
building, career possibilities, and workforce preparation. In other
outreach activities, some youth have participated in the 4-H Soccer
League and attended Latino 4-H camp.
More details can be found in the sections relating to local vision
and mission statements, program goals
and objectives, and key program outcomes.
