The Oregon 4-H Forestry Field Day is open to all youth grades 4-12. The State 4-H Forestry Contest is open to all youth, but only youth in grades 10-12 will be competing to become members of the Oregon 4-H Forestry Team. Four team members and 2 alternate members will be selected for the Forestry Team. They will study together to prepare for participation in the National 4-H Forestry Invitational, which is held in West Virginia in July of each year. Funding for state team member's Invitational participation will be determined by the counties with participating youth and may require some fund raising by youth participants.

The National 4-H Forestry Invitational is a five-day competition testing in nine different forestry events including tree id, insect id, disease id, tree measurement, compass orienteering, topographic maps, a written exam and forest evaluation. Students from all over the U.S. travel to compete at the national event.

Youth and Leaders may use the 4-H Forestry Field Day Event and Contest Guide 441-04 to prepare for the annual event.

Information on the National 4-H Forestry invitational is available at http://www.aces.edu/N4HFI. Study materials and sample test questions for the national contests are included.
