4-H - International Exchange Outbound
Outbound Summer Programs—Cultural Immersion Opportunities
4-H International Exchange Ambassador Programs offer opportunities for young people to explore another country and culture and experience how families in other countries live during four to eight week summer exchange programs. These programs enable young people from around the US to increase their global understanding and to improve their leadership and communication skills.
2017 Outbound Exchange Country Options include:
Japan-both 4 week and 8 week programs
**You can find out information on each specific outbound program by clicking on the country links under the Outbound Program link on the right-hand menu on this web page.
Links to the application paperwork needed to apply can be found on the country-specific webpages (click on the country links found on the menu to the right).
**Please note that all application paperwork is due to the State 4-H Office no later than November 30th.**
Please review this Checklist for Youth Delegate Applications detailing all steps in the process.
There are also adult chaperone opportunities available to accompany the outbound delegates. Please click on the chaperone information tab on the right-hand menu under Outbound Programs for the chaperone application paperwork and information.
For more information contact your local 4-H office or the Oregon 4-H International Program State Coordinator at 541-737-1303.
Scholarship and Fundraising Opportunities
Scholarships are available through the Jack and Kathryn Wells 4-H Global Citizenship/International Program Endowment.
Japanese Hosting Credits
The Japanese organizations offer a credit of $100 for each month long Japanese student a family has hosted through 4-H, up to $300. Any family who has hosted a 4-H Academic-Year Program (Japanese high school student) is credited $1,000 toward participation in the program of the high school student hosted. These credits may be used for 4-H international exchange outbound programs to Japan. For any questions you may have related to these hosting credits, please contact your county 4-H Office or the State 4-H International Program Office at 541-737-1303.
Many teens interested in participating in 4-H Summer Outbound Exchange Programs find it necessary to raise money for the trip. Past participants have used many different activities to raise money. While there are many options, there are also some guidelines that 4-H members must follow.
Most importantly, any individual or group soliciting funds, awards, merchandise, or selling products (commercial or 4-H member made) or services in the name of a 4-H activity, must notify and get the consent of the County 4-H staff. In addition, you need to ask about county specific rules on fundraising. If you do fundraising for the purpose of helping pay the cost of 4-H international exchange programs, then all money raised MUST be used for that purpose.
