4-H Projects

Engineering

The various 4-H Engineering projects provide several opportunities for boys and girls to become involved with a variety of engineering areas. 4-H members can explore the world of computers, becoming computer literate through the use of computer software and the development of computer programs. Members also can explore the magic of electricity, magnetism, and electronics and learn the service and safe operation of tractors and farm machinery. The 4-H engineering project also allows members to make useful articles of wood by learning to select, use and care for woodworking tools. These projects provide opportunities for young people and their famlies to grow as individuals as well as benefit from the project subject matter.

  • Computers Computer literacy and education are endorsed by 4-H as important to the future success of our young people. The great diversity and rapid pace of change that characterize the development of computers and the software they use, however, make it unfeasible to adopt any one set of curriculum materials for the Computer Project area. What is most appropriate is that youth and volunteers interested in pursuing a computer project follow the project planning guide for group-determined projects. A group-determined project will allow youth to design a project that will take into account their skills, interests, and needs, as well as the types of computers and software available for their use.

  • Electricity and Electronics Fun, excitement, action - that's what interests youth. And that's what you can make the 4-H Electricity and Electronics program be for your 4-H'ers. 4-H'ers in the Electricity and Eectronics program can participate in many fun learning activitites such as: w Teaching other 4-H'ers about electric energy.w Making useful items and equipment and learning to use electricity wisely. Exploring career opportunities in electric energy. w Helping ease the energy crisis by efficient use of household appliances and entertainment equipment. w Learning more about hte basic sources of energy and hwot hese may affect their lives now and in the future.

  • Tractor Project/Tractor and Farm Machinery Operator Certification The Tractor project teaches the service and safe operation of tractors and farm machinery. Members may service garden tractors if farm tractors are not available. Tractor project members should have entered the 7th grade. Younger girls and boys usually are not large or strong enough, nor do they have adequate judgement, to safely operate a farm tractor. A large percentage of farm tractor accidents are caused by young drivers. w The project materials are designed for use in grades 7 through 12; however, depending on the the experience and interest youth bring to the project, some members may complete the entire course in a shorter amount of time. In any case, members should enroll initially in Unit 3 and proceed sequentially through all six units. If a youth is 14 years of age and has completed the six units, he/she may take the examination to qualify for an agricultural work permit to operate farm tractors and certain power-driven farm machinery.

  • Woodworking Woodworking is an excellent fall and winter project because it can be done indoors. 4-H woordworkers learn how to select, use, and care for woodworking tools. They learn how to use a square, saw straight, drive nails, and set screws. Members make useful articles of wood and develop and interest in a vocation or hobby. w Activities include tours, demonstrations and exhibits of articles made. The club will need a place where members can work with tools.
