4-H Projects

Expressive Arts

The Expressive Arts projects are for members who want to explore and develop their artistic awareness, creative potential, and appreciation of art and the artistic process. A variety of different media and art forms can be explored. The following projects are supported statewide:

Art: Oregon 4-H Art Project

The 4-H Art project encourages exploration of a variety of media and techniques from line and shaded drawing to three dimensional work. Application of the elements and principles of design is the basis for both entirely original work and projects that incorporate a pre-designed component such as Decorative or Tole painting. An overview of the Oregon 4-H Art project is available on computer CD at all county Extension offices. The overview reviews the curriculum, exhibit classes, and tips for finishing and preparing artwork for exhibit. See a preview of the presentation available at all county extension offices.

Cast Ceramics
The cast ceramics project provides experiences working with ceramics that have been cast or poured into molds. Members learn about the ceramic process, tools and brushes, and a variety of glazes and finishes.

Fiber Arts
Fiber Arts includes a wide range of experiences all based on the manipulation of fiber. A member may concentrate on one area or experience several. The areas include: Weaving, Spinning, Felting, Basketry, Knotting, Braiding, Hooking, Embroidery, Needlepoint, Cross-stitch, Patchwork, Applique, Quilting, and Papermaking.

Leathercraft
In leathercraft, members learn to make attractive and useful hand-tooled leather articles. This project teaches coordination and helps develop creativity.

Photography
The 4-H Photography project emphasizes learning to take attractive and interesting photographs that show good composition, sharp detail, and good use of light. Members can progress from simple cameras toward adjustable cameras and taking portraits, making videos, movies, and slide shows. Everyone could benefit from a little photography knowledge.

In addition to the statewide projects, other projects may be developed as "county only" or "group-determined" projects. Examples include:

Communication Arts
Journalism, mass media, public speaking
Cultural Arts
Cultural heritage, art appreciation, music appreciation, cake decorating
Performing Arts
Clowning, drama, mime, music performance, puppetry, dance
