4-H Projects

Home Economics Projects

Home Economics projects offer opportunities for developing skills that are useful throughout a lifetime. We all live in some kind of dwelling, make choices about the clothes we wear and the food we eat. Home Economics projects are fun, hands-on activities that lead to basic knowledge for living for girls and boys.

Child Development
The Child Development project is a 2-year project that focuses on skills needed to be a successful babysitter. Topics include business management, sitter responsibilities, safety, appropriate activities for children at different ages, and guiding children's behavior.

Through the 4-H Clothing and Textiles project, girls and boys develop decision-making abilities, express themselves creatively, gain knowledge and skills in the area of clothing and personal appearance, and learn how to construct sewn items. This project consists of three progressive skill levels incorporating activities in five areas (Planning and Evaluation; Individual Development and Outreach; Management, Consumership, and Wardrobe Building; Textiles; and Construction). "Hands for Larger Service" exhibit classes encourage making items to help others.
Crocheting
The Crocheting project offers opportunities for members to develop skills that can be useful and bring pleasure throughout a lifetime. The learning objectives of the crocheting curriculum include learning to select, use, and care for crocheting tools; reading and following crocheting instructions; and creating articles for oneself and others to wear or enhance the home. "Hands for Larger Service" exhibit classes encourage making items to help others.

Foods & Nutrition
In the Foods and Nutrition project, members can learn to select and prepare foods that are nutritious, attractive, and taste great. The major focus of the project includes food preparation, food safety and storage, nutrition /fitness, management and consumerism. ENTER JUDGING CONTEST RESULTS HERE

The Food Preservation project provides opportunities for members to learn safe food preservation; practice techniques in canning, freezing, and drying of foods; and use preserved foods creatively in meals and snacks.
Home Environment
The Home Environment project is designed to teach basic elements and principles of design through a variety of hands-on activities and projects that enhance the home. Organization and consumer skills are emphasized.
Knitting
Members learn knitting skills for making useful articles for themselves and others. Included are opportunities to learn about color, design, and the care of knitted items. "Hands for Larger Service" exhibit classes encourage making items to help others.

  • Feel pride in accomplishment
