4-H Projects
Natural Science
Much of Oregon's economic base and perceived quality of life comes from our natural resources. By participating in one or more of the tracks in the Natural Science Environmental Stewardship Project group youth will gain an appreciation for the natural environment that will allow them to become good stewards of its resources.
These projects are appropriate for use in traditional club, aftersschool,
camp and school enrichment settings. For school enrichment use, many are
correlated with the Oregon Department of Education's Benchmarks for grade
5 and/or 8 in science and social science.
Young people can explore Oregon's natural environment in the Natural
Science project areas of:
- Corroboree
- An Oregon 4-H project called "Corroboree" is helping Oregon
elementary school students from Salem and Milwaukie reach around the
world to share results of natural resource science projects with school
children in Australia. For more information click HERE
- EM*Power - Environmental Management and Community Service Project
- Designed for youth in grade 6 and above, this project provides a framework
for gathering factual information about environmental concerns in their
communities, and then selecting a service project and developing and
providing leadership for a creative solution. A training video is available.
- Earth Science & Geology
- The Oregon 4-H Earth Science Leader Guide follows Oregon's geologic
history from island arc volcanoes to the recent landslide that gave
rise to the legend of The Bridge of The Gods. Throughout the publication
hands on activities focus on key concepts such as density, plate tectonics,
faults, earthquakes, volcanoes, glaciers, fossil formation, rock morphology
and soil formation. The 4-H member's guide assists young people to create
a rock collection which may be displayed at school or county fairs and
provides an advancement program for consecutive years of challenging
learning.
- Forestry
- Young people become acquainted with forestry through activities, hikes
and field trips. 4-H members learn to collect and identify tree and
plant specimens and mount them for display and on-going study. Senior
members have the opportunity to compete in the Oregon 4-H Forestry Contest.
The top four 4-H forestry members will represent Oregon at the National
4-H Forestry Invitational in Jackson's Mill, West Virginia in July of
each year.
- Insects
- Exciting new publications available to members include Creepy Crawlers
for grades 4-5, What's Bugging you? for grades 6-8 and Dragons, Houses
and Other Flies for grades 9-12. 4-H Leaders will use the 4-H Entomology
Project Guide to support youth in their investigation of the fascinating
world of insects.
- Marine Science
- The "Our Water World: 4-H Ocean Discovery Project" book
for leaders provides hands on activities for teaching learners about
Oregon's ocean, its shores and bays and the plant and animal life found
in and around them.
-
- Sportfishing and Aquatic Resources
- Formerly know as the Angler Education project, this revised version
incorporates tackle crafting and aquatic resource education activities
into lessons on fisheries and our responsibility to maintain the resource.
In some communities Angler Education Instructors are available to serve
as resource persons to a youth group interested in this project. Contact
your County Extension Office for more information
- Water Resources Track
- This track is supported by the three publications:
--Give Water A Hand
- --4-H Watershed Project: From Ridges to Rivers
--4-H Wetland Wonders Water Quality Program
- These books may be used alone, together, or in combination with other
materials from the Environmental Stewardship Track to focus on water
resource issues in Oregon's communities
4-H leader and member publications for each of these projects are available from each County Extension Office.
