School-aged Child Care programs provided by 4-H.4-H Projects

School-Aged Childcare

As a result of the Extension Cares Initiative, Oregon 4-H has become more committed to providing a continuum of programs that incorporate the 4-H Youth Development Model into school-age care settings. We are focused on:

  • Recruiting Volunteers-such as school-age care providers who are willing to become 4-H leaders during the time they care for children.
  • Training and Mentoring Paid and Volunteer Care Providers-particularly if they become 4-H leaders.
  • Developing and Implementing After-School 4-H Programs-such as experiential science or Wildlife Stewards programs.
  • Providing Curricula-for after-school and summer programs.

The 4-H School-Age Care Program benefits children by enhancing their development through 4-H programming. Families benefit by an increase in the availability and quality of care options provided in their communities. Finally, care providers benefit by receiving improved training and support through the 4-H system. Similar to the traditional 4-H Positive Youth Development Process, the School-Age Care Program focuses on adult development in order to encourage positive youth development.

School-aged Child Care programs provided by 4-H.To achieve our goals, we are creating a statewide network of staff and volunteers dedicated to increasing the quantity and improving the quality of school-age care for children in grades K through 8.
