Greeting from the State Leader

I am please to announce our first 4-H Technology Education Summit to be held on Friday, January 20, 2006 in Corvallis. The purpose of the summit is to identify promising opportunities for expanding the role of 4-H in technology education. Many of you have already committed to spend the day with us to shape a vision for the role that 4-H can play in helping young people learn and use emerging technologies. Following the summit, I plan to assemble a smaller 4-H technology education leadership team that will develop and implement action plans for achieving our vision for 4-H technology education.

4-H has already established several pockets of excellence in the area of technology education. Several of theses are now ripe for expansion to other areas of the state. Similarly, I am excited about the work of many of our partners and hope we can have some dialogue about how we can work together to achieve common goals. I also want us to have some discussion about how young people across the state can pay a role in building the technological literacy of Oregonians.

We anticipate that the summit will begin at 10:00 am and conclude by approximately 3:30 pm. Lunch will be provided for all participants. The specific location will be announced at a later date. If you are still interested in participating, it's not too late. Simply contact Pati Craven pati.craven@oregonstate.edu 541-753-4435.

Oregon State 4-H Resident Camp Resource Manual and Recommended Operating Procedures
We have extended the deadline for your review of this document, posted on the State 4-H web site, to December 15. Please, at minimum, review and be aware of the Checklist of Required Procedures on page 17 of this document.

Camp and other venues:
Teamwork and Teamplay
On November 16 about 10 Oregon 4-H camp staff and agents join 40 other camp colleagues at the American Camp Association's Oregon Trail education event called "One Perfect Day of Play."

An example of the activities demonstrated was the Raccoon Circles. These are made with one 15 foot length of webbing for each group of +/- 7 persons. The webbing is tied at one end and each group member hangs on to a segment to form a circle. Then each group member in turn is asked to say, "Where they are from…" and "Where they have been…" For each of these statements the person speaking assists the group to form an outline map of the location with the webbing. For example, for all of the folks in my group "Where we were from…" was Oregon so we worked together to formed an outline of an Oregon map with the webbing. Go to www.teamworkandteamplay.com to download a sample of 30 other activities you may wish to include in your programs.

Seeking Youth Photography Hosts
We are beginning an exciting new project to help support the 4-H Photography project by teaching the basics of digital photography in a DVD format. We're looking for a few great youth to help by hosting the nine video modules on the DVD. Youth need to be well-spoken, and preferably involved and excited about photography. Youth would need to be available for filming of the modules at various times between Dec 2005 and May 2006. Travel for the youth is expected to be minimal with as much video filming done regionally near the youth selected.

If you know of potential hosts, please forward names, brief background related to photography / speaking ability, and contact information to Elaine as soon as possible.

State Fair

State Fair Wish List 2006
Each year we start planning the coming 4-H State Fair with a tight budget and a long wish list for improving the event for the participants that come to fair. One of the things that has been requested for several years and but we do not own, are a couple of nice screens to be used for Power Point presentations when 4-H members are doing Presentations. The background behind each of the Presentation venues is a curved or flat display board which does not work well as a screen.

If you have leaders, grandparents of members or friends of 4-H in your county who would like to donate a used screen or two that they no longer use, we could use them for 4-H events all year long. Money donations could also allow us to purchase them.

Other helpful items which could be donated are cooking hot mitts for 4-H members who are participating in foods contests and forget one at home. Kitchen timers are also often forgotten at home but needed at the event. Big serving spoons, serving trays, spatulas, pancake turners, kitchen towels are all things that are often needed. If you know of someone downsizing their house wares and wanting to donate something to help 4-H State Fair these would be greatly appreciated.

If they take them to the local Extension office hopefully someone coming to Corvallis can bring them to us so shipping costs won't be involved.

Often this time of year means house cleaning for the holidays and downsizing to make room for the new gifts, so you might want to share these needs with leaders/members in your county.

We like to make the 4-H State Fair a "positive" memorable experience for all participants and often when families arrive at fair and discover things are missing, it's too late to replace them once they are on the fair grounds. We have the storage, but limited funds to purchase these things to have for emergencies.

Contact Mona Easley if you have questions.

Volunteer Development

National Volunteer Week
April 23-29, 2006

Boots, Chaps and Cowboy Hats
January 15 is the deadline for all Workshop Proposal Forms for classes to be considered for the Oregon Leaders' Forum which will be held April 7-8, 2006 in Enterprise. We need workshops to be taught in all project areas as well as general 4-H subjects for overall youth development, such as presentations, teen leadership, leader training, etc.

The form is on the State 4-H website at:

http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/people/volunteers/download/olfWorkshopProposalForm06.pdf

The Forum is held annually to provide continuing education opportunities for all 4-H leaders. Events at the Forum include workshops, tours, displays, recognition activities and time to network with other 4-H leaders to gain ideas that they have used with their 4-H clubs. It's a way of seeing the 4-H organization from a broader perspective and meet new people from across the state. For more information go to:
