MyPyramid Nutrition Resources

After the summer's season of fairs, judges are letting us know that members are not familiar with the new MyPyramid system for selecting nutritious foods and very few members have visited the website, www.MyPyramid.gov. Two very useful resources for members and leaders are available through Learning Zone Express: www.learningzonexpress.com
The two resources are :
Product # 4255T MyPyramid Tablet 50 sheets/tablet $9.95 http://www.learningzonexpress.com/products.php?id=28901
(also available in Spanish)
Product #4159T Dietary Guidelines Tablet 50 sheets/tablet $9.95 http://www.learningzonexpress.com/products.php?id=28533
You may want to combine orders with nearby counties to reduce shipping costs.

Intercultural Communication
This month's intercultural communication tips are taken from Cross-Cultural Dialogues by Craig Storti. In the August newsletter, the first two of Storti's seven pieces of practical advice for situations when we interact with those from other cultures were presented. Following are two more tips.

3. "Familiar behaviors may have different meanings. The same behavior- saying yes, for example-can exist in different cultures and not mean the same thing. Just because you've recognized a give behavior, don't assume you have therefore understood it."

4. "Don't assume that what you meant is what was understood. You can be sure of what you mean when you say something, but you can't be sure how this is understood by someone else. Check for signs that the other person did or did not understand you."

State Fair

Oregon State Fair Road Trip Report

The excitement of Oregon State Fair 2006 is starting to fade, but the memories of the wonderful 4-H exhibits and contest participants will linger on. The judges had very favorable comments about the quality of the exhibits this year. We once again stressed the importance to the judges of writing helpful score sheets and for the most part that happened. We are trying to do some follow-up on ones that did not.

We were down about 700 total entries from last year. That included everything, so some project areas were up in number but others were down.

In the Exhibit Building alone there were 86 judges for static exhibits and contests, 31 volunteer chairs/co-chairs, 95 volunteer clerks, 15 volunteer State Fair Board of Trustee Members from 19 different counties who made this fair possible by helping with exhibits/contests.

Another exciting element is that we had 17 Teen Staff working at various times to assist with everything taking place in the 4-H Exhibit Building for the 19 days that 4-H is at Oregon State Fair. Teen Staff members volunteered a total of 76 days worth of time between the 17 of them.

A few of the comments/problems found by judges that we hope to remedy with fair book changes this coming year were:
" Contest participants who bought food prepared at home and tried to serve it to the judge and the public, because the fair prepared food products could not be chilled or cooked in the time allowed. This is a food safety issue and judges will not eat or allow food like this to be served to the public for tasting. It would also help if county fair food contest judges would not qualify participants for State Fair who try to do this at county fair. Participants need to use recipes that can be cooked/cooled in the time allowed.
" Toppings like chocolate chips on cakes in the static exhibits. The fair book states no toppings or frosting, but exhibitors sent them anyway because they said the recipe called for those toppings. That does not make it acceptable at State Fair. Judges want to see a plain baked cake top.
" Educational Displays that do not have the listed source of their information/reference. This needs to be documented on every exhibit.
" Fashion Revue participants who come to State Fair without a Fashion Revue Card and then have to write their comments, have samples of fabric, etc. once they get to fair. Even if these are not used at the county contest, they are required at State Fair. Commentaries must be limited to 100-175 words.

THANKS to everyone who helped make this Oregon State Fair the best ever! Encourage your leaders and older youth to get involved next year as you meet with them this fall and next spring.
