Animal Science
Educational Materials for Avian
Flu
Over the past year or so, FFA has been working with the Biosecurity for
the Birds Campaign, which is orchestrated through the Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service (APHIS) at USDA. As part of this campaign, they
have developed a state and county fairs outreach program where educational
materials about how small poultry owners can prevent the spread of avian
influenza can be ordered by local FFA and 4-H offices and distributed
at poultry events. Materials are provided for free to participating organizations.

Oregon Outreach
Intercultural Communication
This month's intercultural communication tip is taken from Kaleidoscope
of Hispanic Cultures by Carmen DeNeve.
On Feedback or Input. Many traditional Latinos find it difficult to willingly
offer suggestions in meetings or classes because they think it's offensive
to the teacher or speaker. Instead of asking for "feedback"
such as "What do you think of my plan?" or "What is your
opinion?" try rephrasing your request in this way: "What would
you do, yourself, in this case?" or "I really need your point
of view on this issue. It would help us a lot!" Latinos need more
time to get comfortable in offering advice or providing feedback because
of their fear of imposing on somebody or out of respect for the other
person. It is not that Latinos do not have an opinion of their own, they
just reserve their comments to be polite and respectful.

Shooting Sports
October 28-29 Grant County Master
4-H Shooting Sports Leader Workshop On-line
Registration is now on line for the fall shooting sports
leader training. Please be aware that the deadline is October 6. We must
process all the registrations and order meals and materials prior to NAE4-HA
conference. The spring shooting sports training will be offered in conjunction
with the Leader's Forum in Jackson County.
Counties are reminded that the fees for the workshop are completely non-refundable
and non-transferable. At each training there is at least one volunteer
who does NOT attend and whose fees were pre-paid by a leaders association.
Ask your volunteers to pay the fee and reimburse them if they actually
attend. If you choose to pre-pay for your volunteer and they do not attend
your leaders association must take the loss.

State Fair
Hiring Help
As you well know, the task of setting up and taking down the Exhibit Building
at State Fair is a HUGE job. To lend a hand with lifting the larger display
items like the chicken coop, the store front moving and other heavier
items for set-up on August 24 and taking down on September 4 evening/September
5 all day, we will be hiring 3-4 strong older youth to help us with these
tasks. If you know of older youth in your county who would be available
on these days we would welcome a call, so we can talk to them about hiring
them for these three days. Please call Mona Easley at 541-737-1327.

Contest Scheduling
Exhibit Building electronic contest scheduling has begun for State Fair
Presentations, Mini Meal Contest, Food Prep Contest and Fashion Revue.
The form and directions can be found on the State 4-H website in the Staff
Use Only section at: http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/resources/staffuse.htm
To schedule these contest participants' enter the names and requested
date/time on the electronic form and then sent to Mona electronically.
When the date/time has been scheduled, a post card is mailed to each participant
so they will know when to come to fair. The same information will be sent
to the county, so if the member loses the card, the Extension office will
be able to provide the information. Send Mona the information as soon
as the State Fair contest participants are selected in the county so they
will have a better chance at getting their first choice date and time.
Please select alternate participants for all of these contests so you
will be able to share the State Fair opportunity with others, if the first
person selected chooses not go to Salem. We find that often when August
arrives families want to take a vacation before school starts and they
cancel on State Fair at the last minute. If you have an alternate selected
then they have a chance of going to State Fair to participate. We have
had alternates come from some counties and they are so prepared very excited
to get to come.
~ Mona Easley
Clerks and Teen Staff
Applications are being accepted for clerks on judging day and Teen Staff
for the entire State Fair. If you have leaders and older youth in your
county who want to clerk for a judge at State Fair on August 22 as exhibits
are judged, please contact email Mona or have them call at 541-737-1327.
We always have Teen Staff needs and even if teens live far away from
Salem, they sometimes can carpool a group and get in on the experience
of assisting the State Fair Staff for a day or more.

Teen Staff Opportunity at State Fair
As you complete your fair, you may have members who would like to participate
at state fair, but who may not have qualified to come. Those members may
be interested in applying for the Teen Staff position with either the
horse show, or livestock show. Although consideration is given to all
applicants, those with animal exhibits often find it difficult to compete
with their projects, fully participate in herdsmanship and complete their
work assignment. If you have members who are interested in applying for
teen staff go to:
http://oregon.4h.oregonstate.edu/programs/events/state%20fair/TeenStaffApplication06.pdf
Dates for the State 4-H Horse Show are from Friday, August 18 through
9:00 pm Tuesday, August 22. Livestock Office teen staff should plan on
working each day from 9:00 am Tuesday, August 29 until 7:30 pm Sunday,
September 3.
