Oregon 4-H NewsletterFor October 2005Greeting from the State LeaderLast month, our annual Extension Conference provided us with a brief
opportunity to pause and reflect on our accomplishments of the past year
and recharge for the year ahead. We also had a chance to reconnect with
each other and rekindle the sense of purpose that draws us to Extension
as a career. We were also reminded to make sure that we take care of ourselves
as we go about the important work that we do. The conference also provided
us with an opportunity to think about the future. All across Oregon there are pockets of innovation in the area of technology education. But we now we need a forum to share these successes and identify those efforts that are ready for larger scale implementation. I believe the technology education innovation team can be an effective mechanism for doing just that. The team will also be charged with integrating the Extension BIT initiative and ETIC funded activities into Oregon 4-H Community Youth Development (CYD) refers to the intersection of the fields of community development and youth development. It capitalizes on the bidirectional relationships between young people and the communities in which they live. CYD approaches encourage young people to take an active role in community leadership and change. Through CYD approaches, youth learn leadership in real world contexts as the make their communities better places to live. Research has shown that CYD approaches have great potential for addressing the sustainability issues facing rural communities. I plan to convene the CYD innovation team later this winter. Please feel free to let me know of your interest in being a member of either of these two innovation teams. ~ Roger Rennekamp back to the indexCalendar(click "Calendar" to go to State 4-H Calendar)

4-H Afterschool Opportunity
Oregon Schoolhouse.com is an e-Mall providing education opportunities
to youth, funding streams to education programs, and access to market
for small businesses. The focus of Oregon Schoolhouse is to support and
promote education, encourage the best possible use of existing resources,
and assist economic development in Oregon's communities through our website
at www.oregonschoolhouse.com.
While the site is not yet operational (the developers project the end
of October), they have started to recruit local sites and vendors. For
more information about this exciting new project, please contact Steve
Lamb at steve.lamb@wesd.org
or 503-385-4708.
Steve Lamb met with Terry Palmer and myself last spring. He is funded
by the Ford Family Foundation and is working out of Willamette Education
Service District. He has been charged with developing this exciting new
program for kids. I can see it working very well in Afterschool programs
throughout our state.
4-Hers can learn about business by participating as a vendor
or they can also participate at a local
site (please follow the links to read the brochures which explain
this more fully).

Survey
This request originates from Ron Drum, National 4-H Afterschool Coordinator.
Each state is being tracked on the number of responses sent in for the
survey. The National 4-H Afterschool survey is now posted on-line and
ready to receive data. All county Extension staff with 4-H Afterschool
program responsibilities are asked to open this page and complete the
survey. The survey ends on October 15 so please complete the survey ASAP.
Please remember that timely completion of the survey is vital. The information
we gain through this survey will be used to advance various requests we
are preparing for future 4-H Afterschool funding, in the completion of
performance reports to present funders, and in the development of 4-H
Afterschool growth predictions.
The survey can be found at: http://ext.msstate.edu/survey/afterschool/.
Thank you to Coos, Douglas, Linn, Malheur, Marion, Polk, Tillamook, Umatilla, and Union Counties for responding to the 4-H Afterschool Survey. The deadline is October 15 ... please respond as soon as possible. Thank YOU!!

How quickly 4-H State Fair becomes an event of the past as school starts and volunteers quickly become engaged in county 4-H activities once again. There are a few hard core 4-H leaders who come back to Salem to help us take-down State Fair before the counties come to pick up exhibits and they can't be THANKED enough for this help. They include Fay and Sherm Sallee along with the leaders they recruit to help them and Barbara Kreilich all from Linn County, Annabelle Morgan from Washington County, Doris Noland and her daughter from Wallowa County, Gail Jones from Marion County, Elissa Wells from Douglas County, Lillian Larwood from the State Office and the Dorm Staff members from State Fair. Without them we would still be sorting exhibits and would never be ready for those who come to pick up exhibits.
Highlights of the fair this year included a wonderful Fashion Revue with the theme of "A Walk in the Park" all done by Union County volunteers. Participation in the revues was down slightly even after alternates were also accepted, but having one revue scheduled on the first Friday and Saturday seemed to be a very popular change. Total number of static exhibits was up slightly only in the Foods/Nutrition and Photography areas. Contest participation was down.
The Teen Staff in the Exhibit Building was one of the best we have ever had. They were very helpful in chairing/clerking for contests, answering questions from the public, assisting with clerical duties and helping set-up the fair. They included teens from Washington, Clackamas, Marion, Lane, Coos, Tillamook, Benton, Polk and Crook Counties. Clackamas County teens worked in a cooperative effort with the Oregon Department of Forestry to be Smokey Bear and his helper for the entire fair. These teens should all be commended for their responsible leadership at State Fair. Thanks to the 4-H agents and educational assistants who helped them get involved.
Thanks to Roger Rennekamp for his help and visits to State Fair on several days. Volunteer leaders and chairs were very excited to get a chance to meet him and visit about 4-H in Oregon.
Development Committees will be meeting this fall to discuss possible class changes as a result of concerns/comments arising at this fair. Those changes will be reflected in the changes for the fair book coming out in February/March. All in all things went very smoothly. We still have a large number of parents who bring their kids to State Fair and have no idea that the State Fair Book is online and available to everyone. That's information you might want to share with them again as the new changes come out.
We have very few exhibits that got left at State Fair due to the great work of the people taking home the exhibits and we hope that all exhibits have at least been located at this time. Thanks to everyone for a great 4-H State Fair 2005!!!
